Project Objectives

The goal of the European Windtunnel Association is to form a Network of Excellence for aeronautical applications and related advanced measuring technologies with a management structure and a joint programme of activities.

In a four-step progressive approach (Preparation, Harmonisation, Implementation, Presentation of Integration) over a period of five years it will:

  • Integrate and strengthen European aeronautical research by building lasting relationships and interdependencies between the major European wind tunnels for aeronautical applications and developers of advanced measuring technologies for aeronautical applications.
  • Establish close formal links between major European wind tunnels and major European developers of advanced measuring technologies for aeronautical applications in order to bring new experimental techniques into operation in industrial wind tunnels much faster than in the past.
  • Provide research institutes and aerospace industry with a comprehensive and harmonised set of better and extended services with full coverage of their possible needs.
  • Establish methods for standards and quality control for assessing the quality of experimental simulation and of data obtained by means of advanced measurement technologies in industrial environments.
  • Develop and harmonise wind tunnel test techniques and standards in order to facilitate the execution of commercial and/or co-operative test programmes and the exchange of wind tunnel data.
  • Reduce costs by exploiting synergies between the members sharing investment costs and developing jointly advanced measuring and testing technologies.
  • Establish a basis for common understanding between experimentalists and CFD specialists utilising experimental results of wind tunnel testing obtained by means of advanced measurement technologies for validation of their codes through co-operation with other European Commission funded networks such as KATnet and PROMUVAL.
  • Establish close links to leading European universities in the field of aeronautics and advanced measurement technologies in order to stimulate training activities and to provide a fast transfer of new ideas to research centres and wind tunnels operators.
  • Select leading suppliers of test equipment (mainly small / medium enterprises) and to establish common standards for providing better services to wind tunnels on short notice.
  • Disseminate the benefits achieved by the co-operation activities to industrial end users inside and outside of the association.  The dissemination will be carried out through newsletters, websites, workshops, training, exchange of personnel, and presentations of advanced measurement technologies performed in industrial wind tunnels by joint teams.
  • Review and assess the achievement of the objectives in a measurable and verifiable form.
